How to Become a Relationship Manager in a Private Bank (2026 Guide)
How to Become a Relationship Manager in a Private Bank (2026 Guide)
To become a relationship manager (RM) in an Indian private bank, you need a bachelor's degree, clear communication and the willingness to work to sales targets. An MBA helps for senior roles but is not needed to start. Freshers typically start at about ₹3–6 lakh a year.
What does a relationship manager actually do?
A relationship manager looks after a group of customers and grows the bank's business with them. The job looks different depending on where you sit, so find out which kind you are applying for.
Branch banking RM: you work from a branch, meet walk-in and existing customers, and sell accounts, loans, cards and investment products.
Bancassurance RM: you sell insurance through the bank's branches. You need IRDAI certification before you can sell.
Virtual relationship manager (VRM): you serve customers by phone, video or WhatsApp instead of face to face.
Wealth or private banking RM: you look after high-net-worth customers. This usually comes after some years in the job, not at the start.

In every version, the day is much the same: calling leads, meeting customers, cross-selling products, following up, solving complaints and reporting against a monthly target. Many new RMs quit because nobody told them this before they joined. We wrote about that in Why Do New Relationship Managers Quit Within a Year?

What qualifications do you need?
You do not need a special qualification to start, but you do need a degree and some basic skills.
Degree: a bachelor's degree in commerce, finance, business administration or economics is the usual starting point (PW, IPB India).
MBA: preferred for senior roles, especially in finance or marketing. It is not needed to start (PW).
Age: most private banks hire freshers between 21 and 27, though this changes from bank to bank (IPB India).
Skills: communication, negotiation, knowing financial products, and sales and business development (PW).
Do you need IRDAI certification?
Only if you will sell insurance. A bank employee who sells insurance must be trained and certified under IRDAI's Registration of Corporate Agents Regulations, 2015. The minimum qualification is a pass in Class 12. One guide lists 50 hours of training for a single insurance category and 75 hours for several, followed by an exam, and the certificate is valid for three years (Deployit). Rules change, so check the current requirements on the IRDAI website before you plan around these numbers.
How does hiring for an RM job work?
Most private banks follow five steps (IPB India):
Apply online through the bank's careers page or a recruiter.
Your application is screened for eligibility.
You take an aptitude test.
You have interviews with HR and with the department head.
You receive an offer and start onboarding.
Private banks also run their own training for new joiners. Ask what the training covers and how long it lasts before you accept. Good training goes beyond product knowledge and teaches you how to sell.
How much does a relationship manager earn?
A fresher RM in a private bank usually earns about ₹3–6 lakh a year, and pay rises with experience. These figures are rough guides from public sources, checked on 4 October 2026. They are not our own placement data.

Fixed and variable pay. For banking RMs, Payscale shows bonuses of about ₹0.2–4.1 lakh and commission of up to ₹1.25 lakh a year. Always ask how much of an offer is fixed pay and how much depends on hitting targets.
What are targets and incentives really like?
Every sales job in a bank has targets. A new RM is usually given a monthly number to reach, such as accounts opened, loans disbursed or insurance premium sold. Part of your pay then depends on whether you reach it.
There is nothing wrong with this, but you should know the details before you join. A target with no plan behind it is only pressure. A good employer tells you where leads will come from, how many follow-ups are normal and who you can ask for help. We cover the same point from the employer's side in our guide on why new RMs leave.
What does the career path look like?
Many people begin as a customer service executive, banking associate or sales officer. From there the usual path leads to relationship manager, then senior relationship manager. After that you can move into portfolio management and advisory work, wealth management or private banking, or into senior leadership (PW). Some RMs also move into branch responsibility.
How fast you move depends on the bank and on your numbers. Ask in the interview what a good performer in the role does next, and how long that usually takes.
What should you ask before you accept an offer?
Ask these questions in your interview. A good employer will answer them clearly.
What is the monthly target, and how is incentive pay worked out?
How much of the job is field work, and how much is calling or branch work?
Which certifications do I need, and does the bank pay for them?
What kind of customers will I handle?
What training do I get, and does it include practice in selling?
Will I have a named mentor in my first 90 days?
